About COP17

Ground madder root in a white ceramic bowl on a warm-toned surface, used as a natural dye pigment.
Dried madder root (Rubia tinctorum), traditionally used in Armenian natural dyeing to produce deep, lasting reds without synthetic chemicals.

In 2026, Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. This global gathering will bring together governments, scientists, and civil society in Yerevan to discuss how to protect, restore, and sustain biodiversity.

For Woolway Studios, this event is closely aligned with our work in traditional craft, sustainable textile practices, and living heritage.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biodiversity is not just a policy topic — it is a living system we experience through materials, landscapes, and cultural knowledge.

At Woolway Studios, we see it in the wool, plants for natural dyeing, water systems, grazing lands, insects, and seasonal cycles that support our craft. When ecosystems are disrupted, traditional practices and local knowledge are weakened.

Craft as Living Heritage

Armenian textile traditions grew in direct relationship with local ecosystems. Techniques like natural dyeing, hand-spinning, and weaving were responses to available resources and ecological balance.

These practices are living systems of knowledge that demonstrate human collaboration with nature, not extraction from it.

Woolway Studios’ Vision for COP17

Hosting COP17 in Armenia offers an opportunity to:

  • Showcase traditional knowledge in biodiversity protection
  • Connect cultural heritage to global environmental dialogue
  • Highlight local, place-based practices in a worldwide context

We see craft as a bridge that translates biodiversity from abstract frameworks into tangible, human-scale experience.
